Cost

There were many costs of this genocide that changed China forever. One main cost of this genocide was the cost of Chinese people’s lives. It is highly disputed how many people actually died however. Chinese records estimate around 300,000.  Also, while Japan admits about 40,000 people did die they denied an actual genocide ever occurred. The International Military Tribunal of the Far East estimates over 200,000 and about 300,000 died during the massacre. A German business man named John Rabe, who was an activist in stopping the Japanese violence during this time, said “It is not until we tour the city that we learn the extent of destruction. We come across corpses every 100 to 200 yards. The bodies of civilians that I examined had bullet holes in their backs. These people had presumably been fleeing and were shot from behind.” It is horrible that some Chinese civilians were trying to flee and not cause harm but were still shot as they were running away. John Rabe’s quote also puts into perspective how many Chinese people were killed and that you couldn’t even walk the distance of a couple football fields without seeing a dead body.  As well as costing many people their lives, the Japanese left much of the east destroyed and millions of dollars of damage. It is amazing how much damage was cost, “Observers estimated that Japanese damage to public property totaled some $836 million, in 1939 U.S. dollars, and that the private property loss was at least $136 million. These figures do not include the cost of irreplaceable cultural artifacts taken by the Japanese army”(Chang). As well as the millions of dollars of damage to public and private property there was also a lot of damage to the history of China and their ancient artifacts. The lives of the people of China who stayed were affected and their quality of life was cost. “As Nanking lay prostrate under Japanese rule, the military began to implement measures to subjugate the entire population”(Chang). The military of Japan began to rule areas of China they overtook and changed the life style, making stricter laws. There was a major cost to this massacre in terms of both lives and money and memories.

This song is about sadness and being broken, like Nanjing and Eastern China during the genocide and being occupied by the Japanese
